Accessibility Statement

Stepin works with women across Ghana, including many who use older phones, slow connections, screen readers, or who read in a second language. This site is built for them, not for a design award.

Our commitment

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. We are not claiming perfection — we are claiming that accessibility is a requirement we design against and test for, not something added at the end.

What we have built in

• Keyboard navigation. Every interactive element — menus, dropdowns, accordions, tabs, filters, the image viewer — can be operated without a mouse, with a clearly visible focus indicator.
• Skip link. A “skip to main content” link is the first thing a keyboard or screen reader user reaches.
• Semantic structure. Proper headings, landmarks, lists and tables, so screen readers can navigate by structure rather than by guesswork.
• Alternative text. Meaningful descriptions on images that carry information; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
• Colour contrast. Text is designed to meet or exceed WCAG AA contrast ratios, and colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
• Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, animations are switched off across the entire site.
• Touch targets. Interactive elements are at least 44 pixels tall, which matters on a phone in a market.
• No horizontal scrolling. Wide content such as tables scrolls within its own container rather than breaking the page.
• Readable text. Text can be resized or zoomed without loss of content or function, and line lengths are kept comfortable.
• Fast on slow connections. Images load lazily, video is not downloaded on mobile or slow connections, and the site works without heavy scripts.

Known limitations

We would rather list these than pretend they do not exist:

• Some content areas — the cancer education pages, the events archive and the team page — are rendered with JavaScript. With JavaScript disabled, those pages show a message and a way to contact us instead of their content.
• Content is currently available in English only. Stepin’s community materials are produced in Fante, Twi and Nzema, and we intend to bring those languages onto this website.
• PDF documents published in future may not all be fully accessible. Tell us if you need one in another format and we will provide it.
• We rely on third-party services for fonts and payment. Their accessibility is outside our direct control.

Please tell us. A specific report — what you were trying to do, what happened, and what device or assistive technology you were using — is genuinely useful and we will act on it. Contact us by WhatsApp, email or phone, using the details on the contact page.

If you cannot access something on this website that you need, ask us for it in another form. We will find a way to get it to you.
